After starting a company (and one doing B2C UGC, no less), I realized there’s really so much to learn.
All this time, my use of social media had mostly been venting and browsing. Because of work, I’d dipped a toe into running a fan page, but since I did it reluctantly and it wasn’t something I actually wanted to do, that past practice was, honestly, almost entirely wasted.
Nowadays social media tools have gotten so much simpler that even someone as aesthetically hopeless as me can put together a reel of passable quality. I really can’t claim I don’t know how anymore — if I’m honest, it was always just that I wasn’t willing to try and adjust.
After our company website went live, we faced the same first challenge every e-commerce business faces: traffic.
Building a brand-new brand absolutely takes time and dedicated effort to accumulate.
We’re also starting to feel our way toward a possible path as we experiment.
Now we’re slowly starting to see small results — site traffic has gone from single digits, to double digits, and has now finally broken into triple digits. Our focus is also starting to move toward the next stage: pages per visit.
After all, getting people to our website is only step one. The chain of behavior after that — navigating within the site to a product page, even adding to cart, placing an order — feels like a meridian that hasn’t been unblocked yet: stifled, sticky.
Still, I was clear from the start that this wouldn’t happen overnight. Like water wearing down stone, it takes years of accumulation. So what comes next is just what we’ve been doing these past few months, over and over: test, review, adjust, test again.
